ConceptWHAT IS THE NATAMAME?

The “Jack and the Bean Stalk” story was created based on the jackbean. The jackbean shape is as a NATA (agricultural tool shaped as a sword), the village people in Japan call it NATA MAME (bean). Its vines grow to approximately 6 meters (20 ft). The farmers in the region of Tamba (丹波), Hyogo, Japan grow jackbean without any chemical pesticide. We roast the jackbeans after carefully selecting the best jackbeans. Its taste is well known as "slightly sweet and aromatic, and very easy to drink". We have many customers from Japan and around the world who purchase and enjoy our jackbean tea.

About Tamba NATAMAME Tea

The NATAMAME bean is said to be the model for the fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk." Inside its enormous pods, which can grow over 30 cm long, are large, milky-white beans the size of a thumb, packed tightly together. Its powerful vitality amazes and impresses those who see it. Originally introduced to Japan from Asia during the Edo period, it has been cultivated and treasured as a lucky bean that helps maintain good health. Young pods are eaten as ingredients in miso pickles and fukujinzuke (a type of Japanese relish), while mature beans are commonly used to make tea.

FeatureKey Points That Set Tamba NATAMAME Tea Apart

  • Point.1Seeds (Beans)

At Koyamaen, we cultivate NATAMAME using seeds that have been carefully inherited through self-harvesting from native varieties.
Without sourcing seeds or raw materials from external suppliers, we only cultivate and produce tea using beans that have been rigorously studied and proven through our own research and strict seed management.

  • Point.2Grown and processed in-house.

Delicious natamame tea requires perfect timing.
Only natamame at the right maturity is harvested and immediately processed in our factory while fresh.
We never use purchased dried ingredients.

  • Point.3About 10 pods per plant.

Grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or herbicides, only fully matured pods with beans inside are used for tea. Each plant yields about 10 pods for tea, and the premium pack luxuriously contains three pods.

  • Point.4100% Tamba Natamame

We use only natamame grown on our own farm in the famous Tamba region, known for its delicious beans. No leaves, stems, or other plants are mixed—only the beans and select rare parts of the pods are used.
